The financial crisis continued to affect the Icelandic IP market in 2011, although there were definite signs of recovery. The number of applications for trademark registrations and national patents started to rise again in 2011, after a decrease in 2010 and 2009. The number of applications for validations of European patents and registration of designs also increased, but the number of national patents continued to decrease.

EPO launches machine translation service Print

The European Patent Office (EPO) has launched a new machine translation service, called Patent Translate, on its website. The service uses Google‘s Translate techonogy and enables translation to and from English for French, German, Portugese and Swedish, covering approximately 90% of all patents issued in Europe.
